Where the forest meets the sea

After reading "Where the forsest meets the sea" we decided to make our own collage pictures showing the forest and the sea. We used different types of paper and ripped them to make interesting effects for the trees and the background. We also used colourful paer to create animals that may be found in a forest. We hope you like them as much as we do.

This week the awards go to...

This week our awards go to two special girls in the room. Our S.T.P award goes to M.O for always settling to work quickly and quietly and remaining on task until it is finished. This can be quite hard for some of us to do but not M.O. Awesome work! :-)
The person who showed our value of Courtesy and Manners is J.d-W who never forgets her manners and is always polite to others. This is also hard for some of us so it is great to see someone who does it automatically every time. You are a star! :-)

Ripper Rugby

Today at lunchtime some of room 17 got to go out on the field with Mr J and have a go at playing Ripper Rugby. It was very exciting and we have so many people keen to play that there was enough for two teams. J.V and her friends went along to cheer on both sides and she took some photos to share.

We love Ripper Rugby..... thanks Mr J, you rock!!

Christchurch, one year on

One year on from New Zealand's worst earthquake we wanted to remember Christchurch and let them all know that we were thinking of them. We felt sad that they had to experience that terrible quake and hope that everyone in Christchurch is safe and sound.

We had two minutes silence to remember those people who were lost this day a year ago. We thought nice thoughts for those people who live in Christchurch and hoped it never happens again.

This week the awards go to...

This week our Spercial Person Award goes to B.P who showed what BEST means by not giving up when faced with a difficult task. Not only did she not give up but she kept trying until she was able to do it. I am very proud of her for this.
The Value we are talking about this term is Courtesy and Manners and this week S.V has been chosen as he always demonstrates this value and it is a pleasure to have him in the room.

A visit from Tina and Tane

Today we had a visit from the team from the Auckland City Council who put on a show for us about keeping our waterways safe and clean. Tina and Tane came out of a special comic to tell us all about it.
We learned not to swim in or near storm water drains especially after lots of rain as sometimes yukky stuff like rubbish and dog poo can get washed in and harm us.
We also learned that anything that goes down "outside" drains ends up in streams, rivers and the sea so it is very important that we are careful. We need to wash our cars on the lawn if we can or go to a carwash (they recycle the water) and to rinse our paint brushes on the lawn or in an "inside" sink (this water goes to a water treatment plant to be made safe again).
If we all do our bit to help we can keep our beautiful and precious stream, rivers and sea safe for everyone!

The Great White Man-Eating Shark

Today for reading we made a trirama of a scene from a very cool book about a naughty boy called Norvin. He didn't like sharing the beach with others so came up with a wicked plan..... he made the dorsel fin of a great white man-eating shark, strapped it to his chest and swam into Caramel Cove. The story follows what happens next and Norvin himself gets a nasty shock in the end....

If you want to find out what happens to Norvin read "The Great White Man-Eating Shark" by Margret Mahy.

This week the awards go to...

Homework this week

This week for Homework we are doing an A-Z Thinker's Key. In your homework book you need to write the alphabet letters down and beside each record a kind, polite, friendly or positive word that begins with that letter.
Please write your words in neatly and decorate around them.
Don't forget to learn your spelling and basic facts. We are filling our Kluwell books in in class this week but from next week they will also be coming home.

The Gruffalo

We have been reading The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson in class. We are creating our own character portrait of the Gruffalo from the description of him in the book. First we drew our version of him then we painted the main colours and next we will use a Sharpie pen to add in the details.... stay tuned for the finished results.
