Our Henna Hands

We have been looking at patterns that are used to create the wonderful designs used in Indian Henna patterns. We learnt that they are used usually on the hands and feet during celebrations and we think they look amazing! We have designed our own patterns... what do you think?

Homework this short week....

Our Middle School Poetry Final will be held on 15th November.
We are learning our poems and last week you showed your teacher a poem you would like to learn and recite. This week you need to carefully copy your chosen poem into your homework book. Don't forget to include the title and the author's name (if you know it).

The criteria for reaching the finals will be judged on:
  • Introduce the poem (title and author)
  • Give eye contact to the audience
  • Speak clearly
  • Speak slowly
  • Speak with expression
  • Stand with appropriate stance
  • Memorise the poem
Good luck and have fun :-)

Reading Response...

We have just been reading a story called "When the King rides by" by Margaret Mahy. In it we see what happens and how much fuss is made when the King is out and about on his horse. We decided to draw a picture of ourselves riding by and the fuss that would be made over us....

Homework this week...

Welcome back to a very busy term 4. This week we are starting our Middle School Poetry Recital....
On Thursday the 15th November we will be having our Poetry Recital in the hall. Everyone will choose a poem to learn off by heart and recite it to the class and the two best from each room will go into the poetry finals.
This week we want you to choose a poem to learn and show it to your teacher to see if it is appropriate.... it must not be a nursery rhyme and it must be more that 8 lines.

When reciting your poem you will be judged on the following criteria:
introduce the poem (title and author)
give eye contact to the audience
speak clearly
speak slowly
speak with expression
stand with appropriate stance
memorise the poem

Have fun and let's see who can find the most interesting and funny poem!

After a long and busy term have a wonderful holiday and come back in two weeks ready to look at Celebrations and finish the year with some more amazing work. Be good to your mum and dad and most importantly.... have fun wherever you are :-)

Our amazing transport models

For the last 4 weeks we have been designing then making our own models. We had to choose a destination (somewhere to go) then decide the best way to get there. Once we had chosen a type of transport we drew a plan and gathered all of the things we needed to make it. The results are fantastic and we have been really impressed with the results.... what do you think?

We helped make the news...

More than 1.2 million people are set to participate in the biggest national earthquake drill held in New Zealand (Getty)

About 1.3 million Kiwis have clambered under their desks on Wednesday morning in the name of earthquake preparedness.

At 9.26am, hundreds of schools and workplaces across the country have taken part in the ShakeOut, the first ever national earthquake drill.

Several radio stations and TV1 broadcast a civil defence siren to mark the start of the drill.

Participants were urged to practise the drop, cover, hold drill, which means dropping to the ground when an earthquake hits, taking cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table and holding on until the shaking stops.

People were expected to stay under cover for only about 10 seconds, but director of civil defence emergency management John Hamilton said he wanted the ShakeOut to be more than just a one-off drill.

"Immediately after the drill is a good time for people to stop and talk about the drill, what they did, what might happen in a real earthquake, talk about their preparedness and also consider other emergencies," he said.

"Many of the things people do to prepare for an earthquake are also important for other emergencies."

Since the first 7.1 magnitude quake hit Christchurch on September 4, 2010, more than 27,450 further quakes have been recorded.

Almost 500 of those quakes have measured between magnitude 4 and 5, while 56 quakes have measured over magnitude 5.

NZ's BIG SHAKEOUT

At 9.26am we were given the signal to DROP and we were part of NZ's Big Shakeout. We were all very sensible and got straight under the table, covered our heads and held onto the table leg. Mrs Reid said we were very good and took it very sensibly. We know what to do in an emergency....do you?

We're off...

Here are the results of taking one plain VW beetle outline and having some fun. We are all headed out of the city to our favourite places, why don't you come to...

Another great runner...

Wow we have some great runners in room 17. S.V ran in our Junior Cross COuntry last week and came third!! What an excellent effort; we are very proud of you :-)

Reading Response

Today the Fabulous, Fantastic Readers looked at a book called Wierd and Wacky Inventions. They had to create a timeline showing when some useful things were invented. This is an excellent example by M.O.

We have been practising our earthquake drill ready for the BIG SHAKEOUT that will be held all over New Zealand tomorrow at 9.26am. We know that when Mrs Reid calls out DROP that we all need to get ourselves safely under the nearest table, cover our heads and hold onto the table leg....
We need to know how to be safe in an emergency.

Homework this week...

This week we want to see your amazing models.....
You have spent the past 3 weeks thinking, drawing, designing and creating your model and this week it is time for the finishing touches and then bring it in to wow the rest of the class.
We have a few models in already and they look fantastic!
So get creative and complete your work, it is due on Friday...

A fond farewell

Today we lose one of our lovely girls, our very own J.Q is off to live in New Plymouth and we are going to miss her a lot. We hope she enjoys her new home and school.... don't you dare forget us here at Botany Downs!!
Keep in touch J and we miss your cheeky smile already.
Lots of love from everyone in room 17 and Mrs Reid xxx

It appears room 17 is full of fast ladies... last Friday was the Junior Cross Country and all of our girls ran amazingly well. J.V ran an outstanding race and came in first while P.J-T came in second! What an excellent achievement :-)

It's nearly the end of term.... who has worked hard enough ALL term to get room 17's term certificate? Think back over the term and see if you fit the criteria... if so it could be your name in next week's newsletter! Good luck :-)
Mrs Reid's Criteria for term 3:

  • outstanding effort with all work
  • keeps on trying even when they find something hard
  • shows our school values often

How we can help...

Room 17 and 20 are helping at our school fair with the ....

Everyone in room's 17 and 20 are going to bake a delicious cake, cupcake or sweet treat to sell on Friday 23rd November. So get your thinking caps on (with mum or dad's help) and see what beautiful creations you could make to help raise money for our school.
